“Smokey Joe” Joe Hawbaker, 79, of Mendota, passed away Saturday, February 27, 2016 at his home. Joe was born August 17, 1936 in Paw Paw, IL, the son of John M. and Olive A. (Merriman) Hawbaker.

Joe proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Throughout the years, he worked as a farmer, truck driver, and business owner as well as many other jobs. Joe enjoyed participating in and watching truck and tractor pulls as well as stock car racing. He always had a joke or a story to tell.

Joe is survived by two sons, Kevin (Becki) Hawbaker of Mendota and Karl (Sundai) Hawbaker of Paw Paw; and four grandchildren, Allison, John, Kendall, and Mackenna Hawbaker.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, John Wesley Hawbaker.

Visitation will be 4-7 P.M. Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at the Paw Paw United Methodist Church, 370 Wiley Ave, in Paw Paw.

Funeral service will be at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, March 3, 2016 at the Paw Paw United Methodist Church. Pastor Mike Morrell will officiate. Interment will follow in Wyoming Township Cemetery in Paw Paw.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.

  3. Im so sorry for your loss. Ive known smoky since i was young. I got my first dog from him. He was the sweetest old guy i new. I loved hearing his stories and jokes. He will be missed dearly. Prayers to your families.
