Dr. Wayne W. Brown, 84, passed away on Sunday, February 14, 2016 in Ames, Iowa.
Wayne was born in Ames on August 21, 1931 to Verna (Hughes) and Charles Norman Brown. In 1939, the Brown family moved to Compton Farm in Herndon, Virginia where Wayne grew to love animals and decided to become a veterinarian.
After returning to Ames in 1942, the family lived at the State Street Agronomy Farm. Wayne graduated from Ames High School in 1949 and Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1955.
In 1954, Wayne married Doris J. Blair of Fairfield, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Air Force and began practicing veterinary medicine in Orion, Illinois. In 1959, Wayne and Doris moved to Paw Paw where he started his own practice. As his practice expanded, he established the Tri-County Veterinary Service in 1970. For more than 40 years, Wayne was affectionately known as “Doc Brown” by those he served.
In 1984, Wayne was named National Swine Practitioner of the Year by the American Association of Swine Practitioners. He was a past president of the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association and author of A Hundred Years of Veterinary Medicine in Illinois 1882-1982.
A loving husband, proud father and grandfather, devoted brother and uncle, Wayne was committed to his community, profession and family. He was active in the Lions Club, Boy Scouts and an elder at First Presbyterian Church of Paw Paw. He served as chairman for the Paw Paw Labor Day Parade and, together with Doris, led the Centennial Committee in 1982. In 2014, the village honored him as Grand Marshal of the Labor Day Parade.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Doris Brown of Ames; four children, Bryan (Linda) Brown of Cincinnati, Bruce (Barbara) Stewart-Brown of Salisbury, Maryland, Gayle (Tyler Holck) of Gilbert, Iowa and Diane (Mark) Ditman of Sugar Land, Texas; eight grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Wayne is also survived by his brothers, C. Norman (Carolyn) Brown of Normal, Illinois and L. Keith Brown of Pittsburgh. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Elsie (Brown) Huber.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 4, 2016, at the First Presbyterian Church of Paw Paw, 298 Chicago Rd., in Paw Paw with Rev. Dr. Anne Hoflen officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30 – 1:55 p.m. at the church prior to the service. Interment in Wyoming Township Cemetery in Paw Paw will follow the services.
