John T. Maher, age 90, U.S. Navy Veteran and retired Chicago Fireman, passed away peacefully surrounded by family members on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at his son’s home in Gilbert, AZ. He was born on November 4, 1932 in Chicago to the late James and Annabelle Maher.
After serving in the Navy he returned to the southwest side of Chicago. Besides being a Chicago Fireman, he was a mechanic owning several service stations in addition to starting his own business, Maher Construction. After retiring he lived at his lakefront home in Wauconda, where he relaxed spending time on Bangs Lake on his pontoon boat. He also lived in Oak Lawn and Waterman. His greatest joy was spending time with his wife and children, and going on vacations with them. He was a snowbird and looked forward to spending winters at his condo in Scottsdale, AZ.
Beloved husband of the late Mary Maher, nee Sullivan, married for 68 years.Loving father of Debra (Sam Sr.) McKinney, Jean (John) Hojnacki, Joanne Burton, John (Sandy) Maher, James (Sue) Maher, Dan (Doug Tricker) Maher, Therese Magden and Matthew (Rachel) Maher. Preceded in death by his son Thomas Maher.
Devoted grandpa of Ryan Hojnacki, Michele Roberts, Laura Arthur, Ashley LaRose, Tyler Maher, Kelsey Adkins, Jessica Wagner, Jamie Gitchel, Jordan Maher, Jake Maher, Matthew Magden, Markus Magden, Matthew Gallagher, and Sam McKinney, Jr. Treasured great grandpa of 15 and great-great grandpa of 3.
Dearest Brother of the late James P (the late Betty) Maher, the late Genevieve O’Connor, and the late George T (Phyllis) Maher. Dear uncle of many nieces and nephews.
Memorial Mass Saturday, May 20 at 9:30 AM at St. Linus Catholic Church, 10300 Lawler Ave, Oak Lawn, IL 60453 Interment to follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 1400 S Wolf Rd, Hillside, IL 60162.
