Norm Hanson, 87, of Paw Paw, passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at Amita Health Mercy Medical Center in Aurora. He was born November 12, 1934, in Chicago, the son of Charles and Ella (Svarc) Hanson. He married Irene Benck on November 5, 1960 in New Lenox, IL.
Norm proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1957-1959. After his discharge, he started his career as a draftsman in the engineering department at Lyon Metal. He grew up the son of a carpenter, developed a passion for woodworking and especially liked designing custom wood shelving along with many custom wood accent pieces. As a young man, Norm also took an interest in the railroad due to his uncle’s affiliation with Burlington Northern. This led Norm to a love of model trains and trainspotting. He could often be found at the Rochelle Railroad Park. He had a great interest in photography and he especially enjoyed photographing sporting events at Kaneland High School, while his daughters were actively involved in numerous activities. This passion continued with his grandchildren, as he became a loyal fan of their activities as well. His love of photography led him to submit entries into the Sandwich Fair, the beginning of a long history of numerous blue ribbons. He and Irene enjoyed raising their family and really enjoyed showing their daughters how to experience the outdoors with many camping, fishing, hiking, and boating adventures.
Norm is survived by his wife, Irene Hanson; three daughters, Cathy (Scott) Cunz, Colleen (Bob) Peto, and Sandy (Mark) Jurca; three grandchildren, Carissa (Joey) Beatrice, Kevin Cunz and Dylan Jurca; one great-grandson, Beau Beatrice; one brother, Charlie (Ellen) Hanson; a sister-in-law, Virginia Hanson; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Norm is preceded in death by his brother, Ron Hanson.
Cremation care has been provided by Torman Funeral Home, Paw Paw. Interment will be at 1:00 pm, Monday, July 25, 2022, at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL with military honors. Contributions in Norm’s memory may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 398 Church Road, Compton, IL 61318. Please visit www.TormanFuneralHome.com to sign the online guest book.
